Handling of Danionics batteries and cells

Warnings
  • Keep away from children.
  • In case of eye contact with the battery electrolyte, immediately flush eyes thoroughly with water and consult a doctor.
  • Do not heat or dispose in fire or water.
  • Do not modify or disassemble the battery. This may cause ignition, heating, leakage or explosion.
  • Keep away from open fire at all times to prevent fire hazard.
  • Make sure that the charge voltage is controlled within 4.2±0.05V. Inappropriate charge voltage may cause permanent deterioration of the battery performance, swelling, leakage, ignition or explosion.
  • Do not over-discharge the battery to lower than 0V. This may lead to reversed polarity and may therefore cause ignition, heating, leakage or explosion.
  • Do not short-circuit positive and negative terminals.
  • Keep away from metal and other conductive materials.
  • Do not solder the battery directly. Excessive heating may cause deformation of the battery components, which may lead to swelling, leakage, explosion or ignition of the battery.
  • Do not bend or fold the battery, or any of its parts. This may lead to deformation of the battery components, which may lead to swelling, leakage, explosion or ignition of the battery.
  • When storing or disposing of the battery, isolate positive and negative terminals of the battery to avoid them touching each other.
  • Insert the battery with the positive and negative terminals correctly oriented.

Precautions
  • Do not put the battery in a microwave oven, washing machine or dryer.
  • Do not drop, excessively damage or deform the battery.
  • Do not write on the battery with hard markers or ball pencils.
  • The edge of the heat seal flange is electrically conductive. Avoid installation or placement of cells in a way that might allow the edge to touch other cell terminals, printed circuit boards or conductive surfaces in general.
  • Prevent new batteries from being mixed with used batteries or with different types of batteries.
  • Consult your sales representative if you require series or parallel connection of several battery cells.
  • When transporting the batteries, observe the manufacturer’s package instructions. During packing, make sure not to expose the batteries to excessive vibration or to drop them.
  • Do not store the battery in places with high temperatures or high relative humidity or where the battery is exposed to sunlight, in order to avoid performance deterioration, swelling or leakage of the battery.
  • Do not use the battery if it has been taped to a surface and then removed.

Ultrasonic Welding

The positive and negative terminals of the Danionics Lithium-ion Polymer Battery are provided as foil tabs. The preferred ultrasonic welding method of terminal tab attachment avoids the application of excessive heat to the heat-sealed flange areas.

The cell terminal tabs are described as follows:
  • Positive terminal:
             Aluminium AA1200

             Thickness: 70 µm
  • Negative terminal:
             Copper with surface treatment

             Thickness: 50 µm

Typical length and width for both terminal tabs range from 10 to 30 mm and 4 to 6 mm. Specific terminal tab dimensions for individual cell designs can be found on the appropriate cell datasheet.

Both copper and aluminium have excellent ultrasonic welding characteristics and can be readily attached to a variety of metals and alloys: aluminium, silver, brass, gold, copper, platinum, bronze, and nickel.

By ultrasonic welding of the terminals to wires, foils, poly-switches or other devices, excessive heating that could damage the components or compromise the cell’s heat sealed flanges is avoided.

Ultrasonic welding uses high-frequency vibration to disperse oxide film layers and clean the metallic surfaces. This high-frequency excitation results in a mixing of the atoms without melting the base metals. The energized base metal atoms join each other, causing a true metallurgical bond. This is why it is preferred to resistance welding.

DO NOT USE any type of soldering operation when connecting to the cell terminals.
