Danionics appointed battery supplier for the OQO ultra personal computer
Danionics has signed an agreement to become the supplier of batteries for a new ultra personal computer (UPC) – a fully functional PC running Microsoft ® Windows XP that fits in your pocket. The new product is being developed and manufactured by San Francisco-based OQO Incorporated, a company founded in 2000 by CEO Jory Bell, CTO Joe Betts-Lacroix and a team of professionals whose track record includes the Apple Titanium Powerbook as well as products from IBM, Sony, Microsoft, and Oracle.
OQO’s vision - to build a truly mobile personal computer - necessitated a clean sheet redesign of the PC. The result was a next generation mobile computing device with all the performance and functionality of a thin-and-light notebook yet the form factor and battery life of a PDA.
At the office connected to an external monitor and keyboard, the OQO UPC is no different from a typical notebook or desktop. But instead of lugging around a notebook or accepting a subset of data on a PDA, users experience unlimited mobility. Whether at their desk, in meetings, on the road, walking or standing, they have full access to their documents, e-mail, the Internet, music, video, calendar, and all their other applications and data.
The first prototype of the OQO UPC was unveiled at WinHEC 2002 and the first commercial product will be available in the fall of 2003.
Danionics is already supplying batteries to OQO in limited quantities. Under the agreement, full volume shipments will commence in the third quarter; Danionics will manufacture complete battery packs consisting of battery cells, advanced protection circuitry, and an OQO battery casing.
The order from OQO is Danionics’ second in the portable computer segment. Last year, the company signed an agreement to supply batteries for ViewSonic’s smart display airPanelTM. The portable computer segment continues to show healthy sales performance with expected global growth rates of 13.5% in 2003 to 34.3 million units.
The agreement with OQO will not influence Danionics’ 2003 forecasts, and its financial effects will depend on the market response to this new category. The order is notable because as with the ViewSonic order, Danionics won the contract as a result of its ability to supply ultra-thin, high performance batteries that enable manufacturers of portable computers of any form factor to offer ever-smaller products.
Yours sincerely,
Danionics A/S
